Rembrandt
400 in The
Rijksmuseum
January
26, 2006 - December 31, 2006
All
the Rembrandt paintings in the Rijksmuseum
26 January - 19 February 2006
The Rijksmuseum holds one of
the largest collections of Rembrandt’s
paintings in the world. The Jewish Bride,
The Syndics of the Amsterdam Drapers’ Guild,
the Self-portrait of Rembrandt as a Young
Man and, of course, The Night Watch,
are among his most famous works. But
have you also seen his wonderful self-portrait
as the apostle Paul, the portrait of
his son Titus dressed as a monk or the
impressive still life with peacocks?
It is a rare occurrence for the entire
collection of Rembrandt paintings to
be exhibited all together. And now they
can be seen for almost a month in the
Philips Wing at the Rijksmuseum!
Rembrandt-Caravaggio
24 February - 18 June 2006
One of the highlights of the
Rembrandt year! The Rijksmuseum and the
Van Gogh Museum will jointly be presenting
a unique encounter between the two geniuses
of Baroque painting: Rembrandt van Rijn
and Il Caravaggio. For the first time,
an exhibition is being organised with
works from these two 17th century masters
of chiaroscuro. Over 25 monumental paintings
on loan from various international museums
will offer a visual spectacle with powerful
images of love, emotion and passion.
The Rembrandt-Caravaggio exhibition can
only be seen in the Van Gogh Museum in
Amsterdam.
Really
Rembrandt?
9 March - 24 May 2006
For the first time,
the Rijksmuseum will be presenting paintings
that were originally attributed to Rembrandt
and were bought as such by the Rijksmuseum,
but about which doubts have arisen over
the years. In the Philips Wing of the
Rijksmuseum.
Nightwatching by Peter Greenaway
2
June - 6 August 2006
Nightwatching promises
to be a theatrical experience of images
and sound by the famous director, Peter
Greenaway. The visitor becomes a member
of the audience and Rembrandt’s
Night Watch becomes a play. Nightwatching
in the Rijksmuseum is part of an ambitious
project by Peter Greenaway presented
in four parts, including a film (autumn
2006) and an opera (release autumn 2006),
and can be seen in the Rijksmuseum as
part of the Holland Festival in Amsterdam.
On show in the Philips Wing of the Rijksmuseum.

11 August - 11 October 2006
The Rijksmuseum is presenting
all 60 of Rembrandt’s drawings,
which the museum counts among its riches,
in two instalments. In part one Rembrandt
can be seen as a self-willed storyteller
of bible stories in particular. His originality
is not only expressed in the choice of
story, but also in the unrivalled psychological
insight with which he explores the emotions
of his main figures. Rembrandt: The Storyteller
offers an intimate opportunity for getting
to know Rembrandt as one of the greatest

Vincent
van Gogh
Vincent
van Gogh an obscure unknown in life... famous
beyond imignable hights after death.Visit
Vincent's web site... he needs the hits.
It
is said that in 1902 a merchant in the Duych
city of Breda sold works by Vincent van Gogh
for only10 cents each. Today, millions of dollars
are offered for his paintings. Vincent van Gogh,
born in 1853 in Groot-Zundert in Brabant, spent
a great part of his artistic life in France.
In Arles in the Provence, where he moved in 1888,
he was particularly productive. He painted mainly
to relieve himself of inner conflicts, and to
avenge himself as an artist against all the setbacks
he had suffered in his life. Van Gogh was praised
for his use of light and color. He often spread
his paint thickly onto the canvas with heavy
brush strokes or a pallet knife. He died penniless
in 1890, at only 37 years old. Vincent also had
a passion for the alcoholic drink ABSINTH. But
you will have to visit Prague to have a go at
this experience however.

has an extensive van Gogh collection
Johannes
Vermeer
Of
the seventeenth-century painter Johannes Vermeer
only 35 works are known. They are spread around
the entire world in museums and private collections.
The paintings of Vermeer are small and realistic.
In contrast to Rembrandt and Frans Hals, he
did not make large group portraits but, instead,
painted one or at the most two people, indoors,
quietly going about their business. Such as
the lady and gentleman at the spinet, or the
woman with the watering can and the writing
woman with her servant. Experts feel that daylight
brings out the best in Vermeer's paintings.
The Mauritshuis in The Hague has such works
as 'A View of Delft' in its collection. This
painting was beautifully restored in 1994.
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, with four of
his works, has the most extensive collection
of Vermeer paintings. In 1996 the Mauritshuis
featured an exposition solely dedicated to
Vermeer.The beautifully illustrated book that
served as its catalogue is still available
through Barns&Nobile

A well-known Dutch expression says: "it's
a household of Jan Steen" - which means
something like "it's a perfect shambles".
This is to say that order, diligence and
neatness are absolutely lacking in a house.Jan
Steen himself was always in hot water. He
painted mostly just to pay off his extensive
debts. Jan Steen is one of that small group
of painters from the Dutch Golden Age renowned
world-wide for his works. The very mention
of his name will evoke a smile from many
of those who remember the great sense of
humor that often shines through in Steen'
works. However, Steen was more than just
a jester. His masterful technique and ingenious
compositions reveal him to be an artist of
great stature. Jan
Steen succeeded in recording, strikingly
and with humor, al kinds of scenes of daily
life in the seventeenth century: cheerful
households, festive tavern scenes, revelling
children and barking dogs.If you'd like to
find out more about Jan Steen you
can find him through Barns&Noble

Holland's
greatest artist was born in 1606. During
his life, Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn knew
both great fame and great poverty. The son
of a well-to-do miller. At 18 years of age
he moved to Amsterdam and started working
under the tutelage of Pieter Lastman, a popular
painter. In Amsterdam, Rembrandt developed
his talents as a successful painter. He knew
as no other how to play with light and shadow.
One of his first major projects was record
the anatomy lesson of Dr. Tulp on canvas.
This met with much acclaim. Both The Anatomy
Lesson and The Night Watch can be viewed
at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. But with
the latter, in 1642, Rembrandt was less successful.
His clients were certainly not pleased when
he depicted a number of patrol group members,
on the basis of a purely compositional approach,
in the dark. From then on Rembrandt had a
hard time. The love of his life, Saskia,
died. He went bankrupt. Later on both his
son, Titus, and his mistress, Geertje Dircx,
also passed away. Although Rembrandt remained
a respected artist in his time, and although
he always had work to do, his work was not
really appreciated. He died in poverty. Just
as has been the case with so many artists,
Rembrandt's fame began centuries after his
death. We can safely say that The Night Watch
is the best known painting in the world.
The Rijksmuseum has 21 Rembrandts, including
the Jewish Bride and the Syndics, as well
as dozens of works by two students of Rembrandt,
Ferdinand Bol and Govert Flinck. If you'd
